July 17 @ 8:30 am - July 21 @ 3:00 pm| $250.00
Campers will spend the week exploring microbiological techniques in the lab. They will learn about bacteria and all the cool things they can do. Students will learn aseptic techniques, how to make LB agar plates, grow bacteria, and various bacterial staining methods. Campers will explore the ways in which we can prevent bacterial growth by using antibiotics and common food spices. They will then learn how microorganisms are used to degrade oil slicks, make a bacterial fuel cell, and use fluorescent bacteria to draw glowing images.
The Citizen Science Lab is fully equipped with the tools and equipment needed to facilitate fun, engaging and safe experiments. All students are provided with gloves, safety goggles and lab coats to be used during their activities. We recommend wearing comfortable shoes and clothing that can withstand small messes. While food and drink is not permitted inside the lab, participants are welcome to pack snacks and eat them in the lobby.
