what

they'll

discover

Imagine what your kids will discover this summer at The Citizen Science Lab!

We offer fun, hands-on camps for grades 4 through 12. With a full range of science and engineering adventures -- including robotics, outer space, zoology, microbiology, DNA, and drones -- there’s sure to be something that excites and inspires the budding scientist in your home.

Check out our camp offerings at both of our locations: City and South Hills.

WHAT PARENTS SAY

A great place to learn and connect with other budding scientists. We have participated in many of their classes and a summer camp. We are never disappointed with the kindness of the teachers and the level
of information given. It is a great learning
resource in Pittsburgh.

CAMPS IN THE SOUTH HILLS

Did you know that there may be more bacteria on the planet than there are stars in the universe? Students grades 5-8 are invited to join us to learn all about where microorganisms live (hint: they’re everywhere you can imagine) and all kinds of cool things that they can do. We will begin by exploring how to make LB agar plates to grow bacteria, and learning aseptic techniques and bacterial staining methods. Then we will dive into ways to prevent bacterial growth using antibiotics and common food spices. Finally, we apply our new knowledge on some cool applications for microorganisms, like using them to degrade oil slicks, making a fishbowl bacterial fuel cell, even using bacteria to draw glowing images. This memorable experience will change the way kids think about microorganisms.

Spend a week diving into just how important DNA is to everything that happens in our bodies and beyond. Campers ages 9-12 are invited to explore how differences in genetic code result in the variety of different organisms that we see on earth. We will take on a wide range of hands-on activities, including dissecting owl pellets to identify the DNA left behind, completing a DNA fingerprinting process used in crime scene investigations, studying how research scientists used DNA to genetically engineer different organisms, and conducting tests of different foods to see if they are GMO positive. The week culminates with a chance for students to genetically alter bacteria to produce fluorescent proteins -- a technique that is used by scientists around the world. Students will leave with a new level of understanding and interaction with the roles of DNA in all aspects of life.

What does your DNA say about you? Campers grades 9th - 12th are invited to join us on a week-long, immersive ancestry analysis that teaches them to look at their own ancestry and learn the techniques used in the process. In our camp, students will learn the process of examining genetic markers (such as mitochondrial variant HVR-1), starting by harvesting DNA, and then amplifying genes through PCR, purifying the PCR product, running sequencing reactions, obtaining the data, and finally analyzing it to identify their own lineage through analysis of genetic databases. By the end of this experience, campers will walk away with both an understanding of DNA analysis, and unique, individualized knowledge about their own genetic makeup.

Fascinated by animals of all shapes and sizes? Our zoology camp gives students of grades 5th - 8th a hands-on opportunity to discover the similarities and differences between mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and arthropods (better known as bugs!). Together, we will learn how to classify these creatures from all across the globe and throughout the animal kingdom based on morphology, symmetry, and other characteristics. We will provide a memorable learning experience that includes observation, dissection and other hands-on activities. Throughout the week, campers will learn through activities and crafts, and by the end of the week, all of our campers will have completed their own personal zoology notebook full of all the things they discovered.

Drones are changing the STEM world as we know it, and this week-long camp puts kids grades 6th - 8th on the cutting edge of this amazing technology. Our campers start by learning the basics of what makes drones work. Once they’ve gotten the hang of it, they will learn how to fly many different types of drones, all while learning how software is advancing the application of drones across many disciplines and industries. Get ready for a week full of flight exercises both fun and practical, like learning how to use a drone to take measurements, and navigating through an obstacle course.

Get ready to dive into the world of underwater robotics! SeaPerch is an innovative underwater robotics program that equips campers with the resources to build a sub-aquatic Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV). Campers grades 5th-8th have the opportunity to learn and apply knowledge from across the STEM spectrum, including robotics, engineering mathematics, problem-solving, and other technical applications. After a week of practice controlling their ROVs, we will culminate the camp with a robotics competition. Plus, all participants get to keep their SeaPerch ROVs at the end of camp! Join us for a fun, multidisciplinary learning experience.
