SCHOOL YEAR

REMOTE LEARNING

Imagine what your kids will discover this year  with The Citizen Science Lab!

We offer fun, hands-on experiments  for grades 1 through 12. With a full range of science and engineering adventures -- including electronics, outer space, geology, microbiology, chemistry, and aquaponics -- there’s sure to be something that excites and inspires the budding scientist in your home.

Our Remote Learning sessions will utilize kits and videos which allot each student  hours of science exploration, with a schedule that is unique to each student.

Your young scientists will receive:

  • A complete kit of materials and instructions to complete STEM activities and experiments. These kits can either be mailed to each family or scheduled to be picked up at the lab using a no contact delivery system.

  • Opportunities to ask The CSL’s educators about any questions regarding our programming.

  • Access to videos from The CSL’s educators and access to online resources and interactive activities for learning.

Fold it

Foldit is a revolutionary crowdsourcing computer game enabling you to contribute to important scientific research. Foldit attempts to predict the structure of a protein by taking advantage of humans' puzzle-solving intuitions and having people play competitively to fold the best proteins.

-Apply direct reasoning and intuition to their puzzles

-Foldit kicked off a Coronavirus Challenge where players design a protein that can be used as an antiviral drug, and the University of Washington will take the most successful designs and use them for their research

-There are weeklong rounds, after each round Foldit will analyze the results, and will tweak them for future rounds

-They have looked at the first three rounds and have chosen 99 designs to test in the wet lab

-Students don’t have to just work on the Coronavirus Challenge, they have a slew of puzzles to choose from

-If you are new to Fold-It, they have youtube videos to get you up to speed

Carolina Science Online

In response to COVID-19 Carolina Biological is offering free interactive lessons for Middle School students. The Citizen Science Lab has created an account in order to provide these lessons to our students!

Each engaging lesson includes animations, videos, and interactive exercises with assessments. Lesson topics range from cells and their functions, humans as organisms, plants, genetics, environmental studies, classifications of materials and many more.

Once the student clicks the link to access the science lesson, they can immediately start working through the interactive lesson.

Students can navigate through the lesson using any of the following:
the arrows at the top right of the lesson
clicking on the pages of the lesson table of content
using the navigation bar at the bottom of the lesson
